Transformers 2: my thoughts

I kinda doubt that anybody on my friends list that cares about spoilers haven't seen the movie yet, but just in case... (settle in, I wrote a friggin' novel down here...)LJ cut. )
So that's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.  Starts strong, suffers from pacing issues, overabundance of characters without personalities, and half-assed plot strings.  But damn if it isn't a fun ride.

EDIT: Second pass under the cut, too!!

Opinions appreciated--

I started tinkering with a redesign concept for WTAW.  I know where I want to go with it from a graphical standpoint, just having trouble getting it to find its way out.  None of these graphics are set in stone, and I'm thinking of "pinstriping" around a lot of them in white.

Hey, Ame.  That bit you were talking about fanart getting the front page just because it's popular?

There's a WIP ON THE FRONT PAGE.

UGH.

....ooookay.  I JUST posted the final cover to The Redeemers, and somebody on SheezyArt instantaneously down voted it.

...Scusi?  I understand that I don't crap gold or anything, but why would you negatively score something that hasn't even had a chance to be seen for more than ten minutes?  The only time I down vote is when I see something on the front page in the popular section that I think doesn't show a skill level worthy of being awarded as such.  I guess I expect everybody to have the same thought process about it as me, and it caught me off guard.

Bitch bitch whine whine.

Man, took the Redeemers cover from concept to thumbnail to pencils to inks to colors to graphic design all in one evening!  Killed my RAM good and dead doing it, too!  And it's not even DONE!  Here's a WIP.  Hopefully finish it tomorrow.

Guess the honeymoon's over

It's been amazing to me how much my mom's been on me to finish off Redeemers.  Not that she's been unsupportive of my trying to get into professional comic illustration, far from it, but she's been riding me to get it done.  I took a break from the comic for a few days while I was letting the cover ideas kind of gestate, played a lot of Ghostbusters (finished it this morning), and today I'm starting on the cover's pencils.

Well now that I'm about done, I got the "contribution" speech.  Apparently, because I took one of my days off and made it all about me, I'm a terrible person who doesn't pull their weight around the house, I guess XD

Heh, very Zelda-esque moment happened in Ghostbusters.  Didn't even occur to me the first time it happened, but the light clicked the second go round.  At the beginning of each chapter you're awarded a new power-up for your proton pack- slime blower, charge shot, stasis beam, whatever.  I've had two boss fights in a row now where there's a mid-level puzzle element incorporated into the fight that uses the latest power up.

So, my three-day weekend is officially up.  Back to work tomorrow.  BUT WAIT, I have another day off on Thursday!  Ha ha!  Gonna do a little bit more paranormal investigation and elimination tonight, then work on the cover for Redeemers tomorrow before work.  Hopefully I'll finish on Thursday.

Transformers comes out tonight, wish I was going.  Nothing STOPPING me from going, but I don't wanna do a midnight showing by myself.  They're just not as much fun without the late night antics afterwards.  Still wanna see Year One, too.  Might wait for the DVD, though.  It looks funny, but I don't know if I wanna spend the ticket money on it.

You know... I was never a fan of the tv series.  I've seen a few episodes, but never got hooked.

But DAMN if the movie doesn't look good.

Bustin' makes me feel good

So, I picked up the Wii version of Ghostbusters a few days ago, with the intent to reward myself with it when I finished the Redeemers pages.  Well, today I finished the pages, and fired up the Wii.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Obviously, the biggest difference from the 360/PS3 edition is the graphics.  The caricatures of the Ghostbusters are well done, although Ray Stantz is a little plain-looking compared to the detail put into Egon, Peter, and Winston.  Honestly, I like the cartoony look of the game, the one thing that bugs me in the presentation is the voice over Bill Murray provides for Venkman- He's basically playing Garfield.  Venkman is supposed to be fast-talking, womanizing, and funny.  Well, they got about one and half out of three.  Bill Murray's performance here is definitely womanizing and has a few gems of comedy, but his delivery is WAY too slow for him to be playing Venkman!

Dan Akroyd however, is definitely in character as Ray Stantz, rarely missing a beat in his delivery.  Harold Ramis as Egon Spengler falls somewhere in between the two.  It's difficult to call, as Egon is written with all the dry humor in the first place.  His delivery is good, but so far, not too many great jokes from him.  Ernie Hudson returns as Winston Zeddemore, showing up about halfway through level one's story.  As such, I haven't seen enough of Winston to call the performance, but so far he seems to be pretty on.  Annie Potts as Janine, the receptionist, and William Atherton as Walter Peck are here, too.  Potts' voice and delivery for Janine is perfect, but so far not many jokes have been thrown her way in the script.  Walter Peck, at least in the Wii version cut scenes, has so far been made out to be quite an over-the-top villain.  I kid you not, they made him do the Mr. Burns pose:
Yeah.  Just a LITTLE over-the-top.
Oh, and although the Wii version has the same story, they've definitely deleted some scenes.  There's a clip shown in the GameTrailers.com review of the 360/PS3 versions, where your character, Ray, and Peter get stuck in the elevator at the Sedgewick Hotel (where Slimer is captured in Ghostbusters 1), and Peter has a short comedy bit that was actually pretty funny.  Maybe you revisit the hotel later on in the game, but when I played the hotel level, that scene was nowhere to be found.  One more minor gripe- maybe it's just my TV and the fact that I have to sit so close to be able to play, the way my room is set up, but I can't shake that the game feels a little bit claustrophobic.  Maybe I'll try hooking up the Wii to the big screen TV in the living room and see how that feels.

As for the actual gameplay, aiming the neutrona wand is reminiscient of Metroid Prime 3, but I think it's actually a little bit BETTER.  Possibly because you're playing from a third-person perspective and not a first-person, but whatevs.  The Wiimote gives great control over your proton stream, and I giddily trashed the hallways of the Sedgewick Hotel as soon as I was turned loose.  The control you have over the proton pack is so good, you can write your name on the wall easily.  Also, before starting a mission, you can choose to let a friend join in as another Ghostbuster- many a game of proton pack tic tack toe are certain to be played.  Capturing ghosts is a lot of fun, although I can see it growing tedious as other reviews have suggested, because every capture requires a short quick-time event mapped to Wiimote waggle.  The nunchuck gesture for throwing the trap isn't explained all that well, but once you figure it out, it's pretty cool to pull off.  Maybe Red Fly realized that it was a pain to figure out, because another Ghostbuster accompanies you about 90% of the time in the first level and they throw out traps as well, but leave the actual capturing to you.  The movement controls for your actual character feel a little bit sticky, but not enough to be an issue.  Although it was a little irritating that I couldn't move at the same pace as Ray and Egon while they calmly walked to the elevator, bantering along the way- to stay with them and listen to the dialogue, I was forced to RUN, then stand.  Then RUN, then stand.  And so on.

So yeah, so far, it's a solid game!  It's fun to play and pretty darn funny!  It has it's problems, but what licensed game doesn't?  Once I get my 360, I think I'll probably rent that version just to see how it stacks up, though.

Heh.  Earlier today (or was it yesterday?  Days at Applebee's start running together after a while...) I saw somebody I recognized from high school come in with her mom.  I wasn't really friends with this person, they were friendly with everybody, but I think I only talked to her like three times.  Anyway, I seat them and just go through the schpeils and all, not making conversation or any conscious indication that I recognize her.  I come home today and she's Facebook friended me XD

After dinner rush tonight, the restaurant almost completely cleared out before we got another table.  Easily the slowest Saturday I've seen there.  The good part is that I got to go home early, but I bet my tip share is shite.

Put five more bucks down on Brutal Legend and picked up Ghostbusters for Wii.  I told my mom to hide it and not let me have it until I finish off the Redeemers pages.  Trying to come up with an idea for the cover of the book/EP too.  At the moment, we're using the colored version of page 3 as a placeholder, but that'd be kind of boring to just have a page of the comic book as the cover.  Speaking of Redeemers, did the shading on the backgrounds of page seven tonight.  Have the day off tomorrow, hoping to finish off the characters in the afternoon and start pencils on the last page after dinner.  Completed book by Wednesday?  Acheivable, methinks.

I think the Wha-Chow gods have placed a curse on me.

Every time I have a day off when there is one that I think I might be able to sit in on or whatever, I wind up getting called into work.

Seriously, like, the last three times in a row.  And tonight SUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKED.

Bitch bitch bitch.

Why is my dad mowing the lawn AGAIN when I can still see the "grain" in the grass from the last time he did this? o_O

Probably wouldn't annoy me if it wasn't for the fact that my room is on the first floor, facing the back yard, and I like to have my window open.

Used the $40 I got for my birthday from Mom, Dad, and Gramma to get myself one of those radio adapters for my iPod.  This one is pretty cool, it's incredibly compact and it's wireless.  The drawback is that it won't charge the iPod while it's in use, but how often am I gonna need it for trips where the entire battery life could be sapped in one go, you know?

What else...

Nothing I haven't already posted about, I guess.
